Barclay Park

The Lee Valley stretches out proper green and boggy around Hoddesdon, and Barclay Park sits right in the thick of it - a working nature reserve that feels less manicured than your typical country park. You're walking through wet woodland and open water meadows here, the sort of place where you actually spot things rather than just walk past laminated identification boards.

The reserve sits between Hoddesdon and the river, and it's genuinely quiet even on weekends. Bring binoculars if you're serious about birds; the wetland draws waders and wildfowl you won't see in dryer parks. Families with younger kids might find it a bit limited - there's no café, no playground, no obvious focal point - but walkers who like their nature ungussied-up will rate it. Allow an hour or two depending on pace and how patient you are with the binoculars.

It's free to visit, which helps. The nearest proper caravan base is Lee Valley Caravan Park at Dobbs Weir, barely a mile away, though that site's reviews are mixed at best. Better bets are Hertford Camping and Caravanning Club Site three miles off - properly rated and actually well-maintained - or head further afield to Toad Abode or The Wild Retreat at Redricks Lake if you want something with more facilities.

Barclay works best as part of a Lee Valley circuit rather than a destination in itself. Pair it with a proper walk along the valley paths and you've got a solid morning out. Go early, bring wellies, and don't expect anything showy.
