Barclay Park

You won't find crowds at Barclay Park, which is precisely why it's worth the drive from Peterhead. This nature reserve sits quietly on Aberdeenshire's coastline, offering something the busier Scottish attractions simply can't match - genuine peace and proper wildlife habitat.

The reserve is small enough to explore in an afternoon, but don't let that fool you. Walking trails wind through moorland and coastal scrub where you might spot red grouse, mountain hare, or if you're lucky, golden eagles overhead. The vantage points looking out to sea are genuinely cracking - on clear days the views stretch across the Moray Firth. Bring binoculars if you're into birdwatching; the locals certainly do.

It's the kind of place families visit when they actually want to walk rather than be entertained. Children who enjoy spotting wildlife and clambering over rocks will get hours from it. Those after theme parks and visitor centres will be disappointed. The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper footwear matters.

Barclay Park works brilliantly if you're staying at Peterhead Marina Bay Holiday Park - it's less than a mile away, making it ideal for a morning or late afternoon outing when you want to escape the caravan park without driving far. Allow two to three hours if you're taking your time with the walking and observation. There's no facility buildings to speak of, so come prepared with water and a packed lunch.
