Bandirran Hill

The walk up Bandirran Hill rewards you with views across the Tay valley that make the climb worth every step. It's not particularly high or dramatic - nothing that'll take your breath away in the Alpine sense - but on a clear day you get proper perspective on the landscape around Perth.

Most of the ascent comes in the first half, which means families with younger legs won't be trudging uphill for hours. Allow a good couple of hours return from the base, longer if you're stopping for photos or a picnic. The path itself is manageable year-round, though winter can be muddy and slippery in places.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of walk that scratches the itch when you want fresh air and views without needing to drive two hours to the Highlands. History enthusiasts might find the surrounding countryside interesting - you're in proper historic Perthshire - but the hill itself isn't laden with monuments or interpretation boards.

If you're staying at either Beech Hedge or the Caravanning Club site nearby, this makes an excellent morning expedition before heading into Perth itself. Neither site is more than a five-minute drive away, so it works well as a gentle warm-up walk rather than a full day's expedition. The elevation gain isn't brutal, which counts in its favour if you've got a caravan-based break planned and fancy stretching your legs without overdoing it.
