Banc Melyn

The walk up Banc Melyn from Lampeter side is straightforward enough, though the summit itself won't stop you in your tracks. It's a proper Carmarthenshire fell rather than dramatic peak - rolling moorland that offers views across the Teifi Valley if the weather plays ball. The climb takes around an hour depending on fitness, following paths that are well-trodden in places but occasionally vague.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's the sort of fell that rewards you with decent vistas rather than the kind of thing that demands you rearrange your weekend around it. Clear days are essential - on a grey afternoon it feels like moorland walking anywhere in mid-Wales. That said, the isolation is part of the appeal. You won't be queuing for photos at the top.

From Lampeter itself it's accessible for families with older kids who don't mind steady climbing, though younger ones might find it slow going. Allow a good half-day if you're taking it easy, adding time for a proper look around at the top. There's no cafe or facilities up there, so bring what you need.

If you're based at one of the local camping spots - Lampeter Caravan & Camping sits closest - it makes a decent morning outing before heading into town or exploring the Teifi Valley walks. Worth doing if you're in the area and the forecast looks decent. Don't go out of your way for it alone.
