Banc Du Defended Enclosure

The ramparts are still there, quite clearly - raised earth banks that run in a rough rectangle across a field just outside Newport, doing their job even after two thousand years. Banc Du is an Iron Age defended enclosure, the sort of place where someone important probably lived, and where the community would have sheltered when trouble came. You won't find much in the way of interpretation or facilities here, which is rather the point. It's a walk-up site, free to explore, and you're basically standing inside someone's Bronze Age fortress with nothing between you and history except grass and the Pembrokeshire wind.

The earthworks themselves are the draw. If you're into archaeology or just like the idea of standing where ancient people stood, it repays a proper look - maybe twenty minutes to half an hour to walk the perimeter and poke about. Less engaging if you're after visitor centre exhibits and explanations; you'll need to bring your own imagination here. Kids might find it a bit boring unless they're the type who enjoy scrambling up banks and pretending it's a castle.

It works well as a leg-stretcher between the holiday parks dotted round Newport - Llwyngwair Manor is barely three miles away, which makes it an easy detour if you're based there or at Trewrach Glamping or The Hide just down the road. The terrain is fairly level and accessible, though it can be muddy. Go after dry weather and you'll have a proper sense of what those defences were actually for.
