Balthayock Loch

Drive out from Perth towards the Ochil Hills and you'll find yourself at a proper little water that doesn't get half the attention it deserves. Balthayock Loch sits quietly in rural Perthshire, offering a peaceful spot for a wander without the crowds you'd find at bigger Scottish lochs.

It's a straightforward walk around the water's edge - nothing strenuous, nothing that demands serious kit. The walk itself takes around an hour, depending on how often you stop to watch for wildlife. Red squirrels aren't uncommon here, and if you're into birdwatching, bring binoculars. The loch is shallow enough in places that you get decent reflections of the surrounding countryside, which photographers tend to rather enjoy.

This works well as a half-day outing from Perth, or as a decent breather between bigger attractions. Families with younger walkers will manage it fine, though there's not much to keep children entertained once they've done the circuit. History buffs won't find much - it's not that sort of place. This is about peace and quiet.

The nearest base is South Valleyfield Certificated Site, about four miles away near Kincardine, though it's a members-only caravan spot. If you're staying in Perth proper and want an afternoon away from town, it's worth the short drive. No facilities at the loch itself, so bring water and something to eat. Best visited on clear days when you can actually see something worthwhile.
