Balshaw Plantation

There's a reason Balshaw Plantation keeps cropping up on walks around Clitheroe - it's one of those woodland areas that actually rewards the effort. This isn't a theme park or a manicured attraction with gift shops. It's a proper plantation woodland, the kind of place where you'll find yourself walking under mature trees and actually hearing birdsong rather than screaming kids.

The plantation itself consists of mixed woodland, though it's historically been an important green space for the area. Walking through here, especially on a grey Lancashire afternoon, feels properly restorative. The paths are decent enough, and it's the sort of spot where families with older children will get a good hour or two of decent exercise without anyone complaining they're bored. Younger kids might find it a bit slow after thirty minutes unless they're really into spotting wildlife.

Access is free - which is exactly what you want from a local woodland. There's no visitor centre, no admission fee, no song and dance. Just woodland. Allow an hour to ninety minutes depending on which routes you fancy. The best time is spring or early autumn when the canopy isn't too dense and you can actually see what's around you.

If you're based at Calder Farm just half a mile away, or any of the larger parks like Holgates Ribble Valley a few miles north, this is a solid morning walk before heading into Clitheroe for lunch. It won't be the highlight of your holiday, but it's exactly the kind of local spot that makes a week away actually feel like a proper break.
