Balnuaran of Clava

Three Bronze Age cairns stand in a field just outside Inverness, arranged in a way that still puzzles archaeologists. You can walk right up to them - they're freely accessible round the clock, which means you can visit at dawn or dusk when the light does something genuinely special across the stones.

Balnuaran of Clava isn't glamorous. The cairns are modest, weathered, and you won't find interpretive boards spelling everything out. What you get instead is the raw sense of standing where people gathered thousands of years ago. The central cairn has a ring of standing stones around it; the two flanking cairns have their own peculiar arrangements. Archaeologists reckon these were built around 3,000 years back for burial or ritual purposes - the exact reason still debated.

Walkers will appreciate the short stroll from the car park and the openness of the site. Families with older kids find it interesting enough for twenty minutes or so, though younger children often lose interest quickly since there's no interactive element. History enthusiasts will spend longer puzzling over the stone alignments and what they might have meant.

It's genuinely free and genuinely accessible at any hour, which is increasingly rare. Allow thirty minutes if you're thorough. The site sits perfectly as a quick detour if you're based at Ardtower Caravan Park nearby - close enough for a morning visit before heading elsewhere in the Highlands, but substantial enough that it doesn't feel like you've wasted time. Go early to avoid the midday tour groups from Inverness.
