Ballylane Lake

The water at Ballylane Lake sits absolutely still most mornings, which is precisely when you should visit. It's a modest freshwater lake just outside Markethill in County Armagh, and while it won't rival the big names of the lake district, it's a proper spot for a quiet walk or an afternoon with binoculars.

What you get is a gentle circuit around the water - maybe forty minutes to an hour if you're not dawdling - with decent views across to the surrounding countryside. Walkers will appreciate it; the path is flat and well-trodden, which means it works for families with young kids or anyone not keen on steep climbs. Early mornings catch the light nicely on the water, and if you're lucky, you'll spot waterfowl. It's the sort of place where you feel properly away from things despite being close to Markethill.

Admission is free and open access, so no booking required or faffing about with gates. Realistically, two hours is enough unless you're combining it with other walks in the area. The lake works well as a breather between bigger activities - Tepee Valley Campsite sits just four miles away, making it an easy detour if you're staying locally.
