Ballo Hill

The walk up Ballo Hill takes you out of Perth proper and into proper Perthshire countryside. It's not a mountain in any serious sense - more of a substantial hill that rewards the climb with views across the Tay Valley and towards the Ochils. The ascent is straightforward enough, nothing technical, but it does have genuine elevation to it, so you'll feel you've done something by the top.

The appeal here is threefold: the views are legitimately good on a clear day, the walk itself is manageable for most fitness levels (though a bit steep for what it is in places), and you get a real sense of being away from Perth without actually being that far out. Take an hour, maybe ninety minutes all told depending on pace and how long you linger at the summit.

Families with primary-age kids might struggle if they're not regular walkers - it's not a gentle stroll - but teenagers and active families will find it worthwhile. History types won't find much here, but walkers after genuine views and a bit of leg-work will appreciate it.

If you're based at South Valleyfield Certificated Site (the members-only spot just a few miles away) this makes a cracking half-day outing to break up the holiday. The nearby villages and riverside walks around Perth itself offer less strenuous alternatives if anyone in your party needs an easier option. Weather matters - low cloud kills the experience entirely, so pick a decent day.
