Baldernock Parish Church

A quiet stone kirk sitting on the edge of Baldernock village, a few miles north of Glasgow. The church dates back centuries and feels like the sort of place where you stumble in half-expecting a ghost to offer you a cup of tea. The interior is modest - whitewashed walls, simple wooden pews, nothing fancy - but that's rather the point. It's a working parish church, still used by locals, which means you're seeing something genuine rather than a museum piece.

Historically minded visitors will find the old burial ground worth a wander. The gravestones tell stories if you're the type to read them, and there's something properly atmospheric about Scottish kirkyard atmosphere on a grey afternoon.

Not a long stop - twenty minutes covers it unless you're keen on rubbing headstones and taking rubbings. It works best as part of a larger walk around the village rather than a destination in itself. Families with young kids might find it dull unless they're into graveyards, which some absolutely are.

The real appeal is that it's free, it's authentic, and it breaks up a day nicely if you're based at The WHW Hotel & Campsite down the road. The staff there can point you towards it easily enough. Go on a clear morning if you can - the light through those old windows is something.
