Bakestall (Wainwright summit)

The walk to Bakestall is a proper fell scramble, and you're doing it for the views rather than the summit itself - which is really just a rocky outcrop at 902 metres. What makes it worth the slog from Keswick is the panorama across the Northern Fells. On a clear day you can pick out Skiddaw and Blencathra, and the sweep down into the valleys below is genuinely impressive.

You can tackle this as part of a longer circuit, or do a straightforward out-and-back from the Orthwaite area - allow a good three to four hours depending on fitness and how often you stop to catch your breath. It's not a walk for absolute beginners, but it's not desperate either. Families with teenagers who are used to hills will manage it fine. Younger kids might find the rocky sections fiddly rather than genuinely dangerous, though you do need to watch your footing on the way down.

The exposure isn't extreme, but it's enough to keep you engaged. There's no café, no facilities, nothing - just you, the fell, and whatever weather Cumbria decides to throw at you. Start early and check the forecast. The walk suits anyone who likes getting above the tree line without needing mountaineering skills.

If you're basing yourself at Kestrel Lodge Campsite just outside Keswick, Bakestall fits neatly into a week of fell-walking. It's accessible enough for a day trip but rewarding enough to feel like you've actually done something.
