Baker's Wood

Baker's Wood is a proper woodland walk just inland from Minehead, the sort of place that rewards a bit of effort without demanding serious hiking boots. You're threading through mixed forest - oak, beech, the usual Somerset woodland suspects - with enough natural variation to keep things interesting rather than repetitive.

It's genuinely good for families who don't want a full fell-walk but fancy something more than a car park stroll. Kids will spot wildlife if they're patient, and there's real forest floor underfoot which makes it feel properly outdoorsy. The walk works well as a half-day excursion, giving you space to breathe before heading back towards the coast at Minehead.

Who gets most from it? Walkers after something moderate and local, families wanting to break up a caravan week, and anyone wanting to escape the crowds at the seafront without travelling far. If you're based at Minehead Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, it's close enough for an afternoon trip without burning fuel on a massive drive.

The woodland itself is free - no gate fees or admission charges - though getting there requires decent footwear and a map or phone with directions sorted. Summer's lovely if you want dappled shade, but autumn probably shows the wood at its best. Allow two to three hours depending on pace and how many times you stop to admire moss-covered branches. It's not flashy or Instagram-ready, but it's proper Somerset forest that actually feels like woods rather than a managed nature reserve.
