Bainton Buttercross

There's a rather lovely stone cross standing in the middle of Bainton village, just a short drive south of Stamford. The Buttercross is one of those proper medieval monuments that most people drive straight past without noticing - and that's a shame, because it's genuinely worth stopping for.

This is a working market cross, or at least it was meant to be. Built centuries ago, it's the kind of structure where villagers would have gathered to buy butter and other goods - hence the name. The stonework tells you everything about how people lived here, and it's the sort of thing that grounds you immediately in the real history of the place rather than the tourist version.

You can wander round it freely, take photographs, and spend ten minutes examining the carved details. There's no entry fee, no opening hours to worry about - it's just there, part of the village, doing what it's done for generations. It works well if you're staying at any of the nearby glamping spots like Stamford Meadows or The Nest, both within a few miles. Bundle this in with a walk round Stamford itself, which is only a couple of minutes away, and you've got a proper afternoon.

Honestly, this isn't the sort of place that'll keep you occupied for hours. But if you're interested in medieval villages or just appreciate that a small stone cross can tell you more about daily life than any museum, it's well worth the detour.
