Bailey's Whins

You'll find Bailey's Whins just outside Otley, a proper woodland walk that doesn't need a visitor centre or gift shop to justify itself. The forest floor is carpeted with bracken and heather, paths wind through dense stands of conifers and native broadleaves, and on a quiet afternoon you might only hear birdsong and your own footsteps. It's straightforward walking country - nothing technical, no dramatic summits - but the kind of place that clears your head after an hour or two in the trees.

This works best for walkers and families who want a proper leg-stretch without complications. The woodland is fairly dense in places, so younger children stay close (which they'll do naturally anyway). You could knock this over in an hour if you're brisk, or meander for two or three if the light's good and you're in no rush. There are no facilities that I'm aware of, so bring what you need.

It slots nicely into a broader Yorkshire Dales holiday. Rudding Holiday Park sits 5.6 miles away and Harrogate Caravan Park is only 5.8 miles south - both solid options if you're basing yourselves in the area. Otley itself is a decent market town with pubs and cafes, so you can combine the forest with a proper day out. Bailey's Whins isn't a headline attraction, but it's reliable woodland and worth the detour if you're staying nearby and fancy trees over moors for a morning.
