The cave itself doesn't go deep, which some find disappointing, but that's rather the point. You're looking at a short self-guided walk rather than a proper underground expedition. Most people spend thirty minutes to an hour here, poking around the entrance chamber and having a bit of a scramble about. It's free, which means no queuing, no gift shop pressure, no timed entry slots. Just you and some very old rocks. Families with younger kids will find it exciting enough for a morning activity, particularly if combined with a walk around the Hope Valley. Serious cavers will likely find it a bit tame. The real value is in the setting - you're in proper walking country, with Castleton just down the road and several decent caravan parks within striking distance like Laneside or Castleton Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite if you're basing yourself in the area. Go when the light's decent enough to see inside without a torch being essential, though bringing one doesn't hurt. The path up to it is straightforward if a bit boggy in places. Whether it justifies a specific trip on its own is debatable, but as part of a broader Peak District ramble, it's well worth the detour.
