Baggy Point Cliffs.

The walk out to Baggy Point is one of those Devon coastal stretches that justifies a morning's effort. The cliffs themselves are proper dramatic - golden sandstone faces that drop sheer to the rocks below, especially when you round the final bend and they suddenly rear up in front of you. The route from Braunton takes you across fields, down through a coastal valley, and along a sandy beach before the final push up to the headland. Allow a good two hours return, maybe three if you're stopping to photograph things or eat a packed lunch at the top.

It's a walker's spot rather than somewhere to park the car for 20 minutes. Families with half-decent legs will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the approach bit of a slog. The views from the point itself stretch right along the coast - you can see Woolacombe Beach in one direction and back towards Braunton in the other. On a clear day it's the sort of place that reminds you why you bothered with the South West.

If you're based at one of the holiday parks nearby - Golden Sands is only three miles away - Baggy Point works perfectly as a half-day excursion. Start early to avoid the afternoon crowds and the glare in your photos. There's no charge to walk it, no facilities up there either, so bring water. The cliffs can be windy, proper windy, so don't expect a leisurely wander if the Atlantic is in a mood.
