Bag Tor

The walk up Bag Tor takes about forty minutes from the car park, and it's steep enough to earn a proper breather halfway. What you get at the top, though, makes it worth the effort - a 1,559-foot peak on the edge of Dartmoor with views that stretch across Devon on a clear day. The tor itself is a jumble of granite boulders, the kind you can scramble over if you fancy it, or just sit among if the wind's picking up.

It's a walker's spot, no question. Families with older kids will manage it fine, but toddlers and pushchairs won't get far. There's no visitor centre, no facilities, nothing commercialised about it - you're just out on the moor with the weather and the views. That's rather the point. The granite outcrops catch the light differently throughout the day, and if you time it right with the sun low, the photographs are decent.

Newton Abbot sits just a few miles away, which makes Bag Tor easy to slot into a wider Dartmoor circuit. If you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park - a relaxed adult-only spot nearby - this is the kind of hike that fills a morning without demanding your whole day. Go early to avoid any crowds, take water, and check the weather forecast. The moor can turn in minutes.
