Bacton Woods

A proper slice of Norfolk woodland that feels worlds away from the caravan parks clustered around North Walsham. Bacton Woods is the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - ancient trees, quiet paths, and if you're lucky, a flash of woodland birds that make the trip worthwhile.

What you get here is straightforward: a nature reserve with walking trails threading through mixed woodland. It's not dramatic or showy. There are no visitor centres or tea shops, just trees and the occasional clearing where light actually reaches the forest floor. Depending on the season you'll spot bluebells in spring, decent bird activity year-round, and that particular smell of damp earth and leaf mulch that proper woods have.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might manage an hour before restlessness sets in, unless they're the type who genuinely enjoy spotting wildlife and natural history. If you're staying at Two Mills or Manor Caravan Park nearby, it's an easy detour rather than a destination in itself.

The real appeal is as a break from the caravan routine - somewhere to stretch legs and remember what Norfolk's ancient woodland actually looked like before it all got ploughed up. Allow ninety minutes if you're taking it slow with binoculars. Best visited early morning when birds are active and you've got the place to yourself. It's free and accessible, which helps justify the small amount of effort to find it east of North Walsham.
