Bacon Hole

Carved into the limestone cliffs of the Gower Peninsula, this narrow sea cave stretches about 100 metres into the rock face near Pwlldu Bay. The name might raise a few eyebrows, but Bacon Hole earned its moniker from the streaky bacon-like patterns in the cave walls - reddish-brown iron deposits striping through the pale limestone.

Getting there requires a proper coastal walk from the nearest car park, so it's one for those who don't mind a bit of scrambling over rocks. The cave entrance sits at beach level, accessible only at low tide, which adds an element of planning to your visit. Inside, the cave narrows considerably, and while you don't need caving experience, a torch is essential if you want to explore beyond the entrance.

Archaeologically minded visitors will appreciate that this cave has yielded significant prehistoric finds, including Neanderthal teeth - though you're more likely to spot the occasional seal than ancient remains these days. Families with older children who enjoy adventure will get the most from it, but it's definitely not suitable for pushchairs or anyone with mobility issues.
