B-24J 42-51503 "Crows Nest"

The fuselage of a Second World War American bomber sits in a Norfolk field like a time capsule that never quite closed. This B-24J Liberator, serial number 42-51503 and christened 'Crows Nest' by its crew, came down here in 1944 after a raid over Germany. Walking around the preserved wreckage - what remains of it - is sobering. You can still make out the nose section, the gun turrets, the twisted metal that tells the story of what these young men endured.

It's a straightforward visit, not a museum with interactive displays or gift shops. What you get is the thing itself, sitting quietly outside Norwich, a genuine piece of history that refuses to be sanitised. History buffs will spend a good hour here, reading the plaques, imagining the crew. Families with teenagers interested in World War Two will find it genuinely moving rather than dry. Younger kids might find it a bit abstract - it's not flashy.

The site appears to be accessible year-round without admission charges, though facilities are minimal. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.
