Avenham and Miller Park

The River Ribble curves through Preston with a generosity that makes you wonder why more people aren't here on a Sunday afternoon. Avenham and Miller Park runs along both banks - 44 acres of proper parkland that feels older than the city itself, which it is. The Victorians built this place and it shows in the mature trees, the formal gardens, and the sense that someone once cared deeply about how people should spend their leisure time.

You get riverside walks on both sides, stone bridges connecting the two halves, and enough green space to lose a couple of hours without feeling rushed. The Avenham side has the steeper banks, all tree-lined and atmospheric, while Miller Park is flatter and more open. Kids will enjoy the space to run about, but it's walkers and photographers who'll get the most from it - the light through the trees in late afternoon is genuinely good. On a clear day you can sit by the water and forget you're in the middle of a Lancashire city.

Free to access, open all hours since it's a public park. Allow two hours minimum if you're doing both sides properly, longer if you're the sort who stops to sketch or sit on benches. Combine it with Smithills View Campsite or Brylea Caravan Park - both just under four miles away - and you've got a decent base for exploring Preston's riverside without paying theme park prices. It's not flashy, but it's real.
