Avebury

Walk straight into a 4,500-year-old stone circle and you'll understand why Avebury feels properly different to Stonehenge. The village essentially sits inside the monument - houses, a pub, even the church nestle within the massive chalk bank and ditch that once held nearly 100 standing stones. Most are gone now, toppled by medieval farmers or buried beneath later construction, but enough remain to give you the scale of what's here.

It's free to wander around, which is the beauty of it. You can spend ten minutes getting photos or easily half a day tracing the full circuit if you're into prehistory. The chalk earthwork itself is genuinely impressive - walk up to the bank's edge and you feel the effort involved. Families with kids tend to do well here because there's space to actually move around, unlike the roped-off crowds at Stonehenge near Salisbury.

History enthusiasts will want the museum at the Alexander Keiller site for context, though opening times vary. Walkers heading out from Marlborough should definitely loop through - the Ridgeway path runs nearby and the downland around here rewards proper exploration. The landscape pulls at you in a way the stones alone don't quite manage.

Stay at Ridgeway Campsite or Honey Bee Glamping, both close enough for an easy morning visit before heading elsewhere. Summer mornings are best - you avoid the tour groups and the light catches the remaining sarsens differently. Worth the drive, genuine piece of archaeology you can actually touch.
