Austin's Green Plantation

The woodland here spreads across Hampshire's rolling countryside just outside Winchester, a proper mix of mature trees and younger plantings that actually feels like a working forest rather than a manicured park. You can walk through it fairly easily - the paths are decent and reasonably well-maintained, though they're muddy as hell after rain, so bring decent boots. The canopy's thick enough to feel genuinely remote despite being minutes from the town.

It's ideal if you're after a proper woodland walk without the crowds you'd get at somewhere more famous. Kids will get a decent hour or two out of it, poking about in the undergrowth and climbing fallen logs, but there's nothing clever here - no play areas, cafes, or visitor facilities that I could see. Bring a picnic if you want one. Walkers will appreciate the quietness, and it's the kind of place where you might spot deer if you're lucky and keep your noise down.

Timing-wise, spring's when it actually sings - bluebells carpet the forest floor, which transforms the whole experience. Summer's green and shady, autumn's brilliant for colour. Winter's fine for a brisk stomp if the ground's not waterlogged.

If you're camping at Beechen Glamping or Holden Farm nearby, this makes a solid morning outing before heading into Winchester proper for lunch. It's close enough that you won't spend forever driving, but far enough away that it feels like proper countryside.
