Auchtermuchty Common

The Common at Auchtermuchty is one of those places that creeps up on you. A proper open moorland space a few miles south of Perth, it's the kind of spot locals head to without making a fuss about it. You get wide views across Fife from the higher ground, and on a clear day it's genuinely worth the drive from the nearby caravan parks.

There's nothing fancy here - no visitor centre, no café, no interpretation boards telling you what you're looking at. It's just good walking country with a working landscape feel. Moorland paths take you through heather and rough grassland, and it suits people who like stretching their legs without needing a three-hour expedition. Families with kids aged eight upwards will get something from it; younger ones might find it a bit featureless after twenty minutes.

Historically it's a common in the proper sense - land with traditional grazing rights - which gives it character you won't find in manicured country parks. It's free to access, and there's no particular "best time" except avoiding waterlogged conditions in winter.

If you're staying at Annsmuir Parkhome or Snugs at Logie Farm, both within five or six miles, it's worth a half-day visit to break up the park routine. Don't expect drama or facilities, but if you want genuine Fife moorland without the crowds, this delivers. Proper working landscape stuff.
