Auchnerran Woods

Walking into Auchnerran Woods near Aboyne, you're immediately surrounded by tall Scots pine and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Aberdeenshire in the first place. It's a proper forest - the sort where you can actually lose the sound of the road within minutes, even though the car park isn't far behind you.

The woodland itself is straightforward: well-maintained paths wind through mature trees, with patches of open ground where the light gets through. On a clear day, you've got decent views across the Dee Valley. It's not dramatic, but it's exactly what you want if you're after a solid two-hour forest walk without climbing much. Families with younger kids will manage fine here - the paths are generally easy, though muddy after rain.

Bring proper boots. The ground can be boggy in places, and there's no point pretending otherwise. Allow an hour minimum if you're just pottering about, two if you want to do a proper loop.

If you're based at Tarland Camping & Caravanning Club Site or Firbank Park - both excellent spots for a Deeside holiday - Auchnerran is a proper no-brainer for a morning walk. The proximity means you can squeeze it in without planning a major excursion. It won't blow your mind, but it's reliable and genuinely peaceful. Worth the detour if you're in the area; probably not worth planning a trip round it alone.
