Auchengibbert Hill

The walk up Auchengibbert Hill from Thornhill takes you through proper Scottish moorland that feels genuinely remote, even though you're only minutes from civilization. It's a modest peak by Lowland standards - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but the views back towards Nithsdale are worth the forty-minute slog up.

On a clear day you get a decent sense of how the land rolls away to the south, with the Lowther Hills picking up the skyline. The moorland itself is what makes it worthwhile: purple heather in late summer, rough grass underfoot, and enough peace to actually hear yourself think. It's the kind of walk where you bump into maybe one other person, if that.

Walkers with reasonable fitness will find it manageable. Families with young legs will enjoy it; those after a strenuous peak bagging shouldn't come. The hill suits a morning jaunt combined with lunch in Thornhill afterwards. There's no visitor infrastructure on the hill itself - bring water and something to eat.

If you're based at Penpont Holiday Park nearby, this makes an excellent half-day outing before heading back for a late breakfast. The walk doesn't demand much planning, just good boots and reasonable weather.
