Auchengassel Clump

A stand of Scots pine and larch rising sharply from the moorland near Thornhill, Auchengassel Clump is the sort of place you'd stumble upon by accident and be genuinely glad you did. The forest isn't vast - you're looking at maybe half an hour of proper wandering - but it's dense enough to feel like proper woodland once you're inside, which is a relief when you're surrounded by open Dumfries & Galloway countryside.

The walk in is gentle enough. Paths weave through the trees with views opening out across the valleys beyond, and on a decent day the light filtering through the canopy is rather lovely. It's the kind of spot where locals actually come, not somewhere that's been packaged up for tourists, which means it's refreshingly straightforward - no visitor centre, no café, just trees and air.

For families with younger kids, the limited size is actually a bonus. They won't get bored halfway through, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep them interested without being challenging. Walkers using Penpont Holiday Park as a base - just 3.2 miles away - could easily slot this in as a quick morning ramble before moving on to bigger pursuits. History types won't find much to grab hold of here; this is purely about getting among some proper Scottish woodland without fuss.
