Auchengaich Reservoir

The water here sits quiet and still, hemmed in by moorland that rolls away toward the Argyll hills. Auchengaich Reservoir is the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - a working water supply that's managed to stay genuinely peaceful, about forty minutes inland from Helensburgh. There's no visitor centre or cafe, which means it's wonderfully free of the usual trappings. You get a reservoir, proper Highland scenery, and if you're lucky, very few other people.

Walkers get the most from this spot. The surrounding paths aren't particularly demanding - you can cover decent ground without needing fell boots - and the moorland here has that open, roll-and-dip quality that makes for satisfying walking without being showy about it. The water itself is the main event; it catches light nicely in the afternoon, and the hills above create some decent photo moments if you're inclined that way. Kids might manage an hour here before asking if there's anything else, and that's fine - it's not designed as a long-stop attraction.

If you're based at one of the nearby parks like Inverbeg or Rosneath Castle - both excellent if you're after a proper caravan base - Auchengaich works as a half-day diversion. Pack binoculars if you're into birds. Entry appears to be free, though the place feels like it could disappear from the tourist map tomorrow without anyone particularly noticing. That's actually part of its appeal.
