Auchengaich Hill

The walk up Auchengaich Hill rewards you with proper views across the Firth of Clyde - the kind that make you understand why people bother with Scottish peaks in the first place. It's not a massive undertaking, which is the whole appeal. From Helensburgh you're looking at maybe an hour's climb to the summit, and the path is straightforward enough that families with older kids won't struggle.

The water below catches the light differently depending on when you visit, and on a clear day the sight lines stretch far enough to make the effort feel worthwhile. The hill itself is properly wild - heather and rough grass, the kind of terrain that feels remote even though civilization is visible in the distance.

This works brilliantly as a morning walk if you're staying at Rosneath Castle Caravan Park or Inverbeg Holiday Park, both within easy striking distance. You'll be back for lunch without breaking a sweat. It's the sort of thing that takes the edge off cabin fever during a park holiday without eating your whole day.

Timing matters though. Go early in the day if you want the best light, and avoid the drizzly afternoons that roll in unpredictably. Bring proper footwear - it gets boggy in patches. The hill itself is free to access, no gates or barriers, just park near Helensburgh and find your way up. Most walkers allow two hours there and back, which feels about right if you want to linger at the top.
