Auchendolly Hill

The walk up Auchendolly Hill near Castle Douglas takes you through proper Scottish moorland - the kind of terrain that feels genuinely remote despite being barely three miles from the nearest caravan park. It's not a massive peak by any stretch, but the views across Dumfries and Galloway open out surprisingly well once you're up there, and on a clear day you can pick out the broader Lowlands rolling away in every direction.

This is a decent option if you're staying at Mollance Farm Caravan Park or Galloway Glamping and fancy a proper walk without committing to a full day expedition. Most people manage the ascent in under an hour, which makes it realistic for families with younger kids or anyone not keen on slogging for hours. The ground can be boggy in places - nothing unusual for this part of Scotland - so proper boots are worth the bother.

What you won't find is a marked path, a café at the top, or crowds. That's precisely the point. If you're after solitude and honest Scottish hill walking without drama, it works. The wider area around Loch Ken Holiday Park and beyond offers better-known walks if Auchendolly feels too rough-and-ready, but this one rewards the effort with genuine quietness. Free to access, obviously - it's a hillside. Allow a couple of hours there and back if you're taking it steady and want to sit about at the summit.
