Atkinsons Plantation

The forest at Atkinsons Plantation spreads across decent acreage just outside Penrith, offering proper woodland walking without the crowds you'd find at some Lake District hotspots. It's a working plantation - lots of conifers, shade, and the sort of quiet that makes you actually hear the birds instead of other people's podcasts.

Walking here suits anyone who wants to get into trees without needing proper fell boots or scrambling skills. The trails are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though older walkers won't find it challenging. You're looking at an hour to ninety minutes depending on which routes you pick and how many times you stop to catch your breath.

The main draw is the peace, really. No visitor centre nonsense, no car park queues at weekends. Just forest, some decent vistas if you head to the higher bits, and the chance to work off breakfast before heading back towards Penrith for lunch.

If you're camping nearby - and Crossfells Campsite is only three miles away - this makes an excellent morning outing that won't eat into your day. Howdy Glamping is similarly close if you prefer something with more creature comforts. Weather matters here more than most places. Muddy in winter, properly lovely in autumn when the light filters through differently.

Free to wander, no facilities that I could find, so bring water. Go early if you value solitude.
