Atholl Men

The Atholl Men memorial stands on Culloden Battlefield just outside Inverness, marking one of the most poignant moments in Scottish history. If you're just after a nice walk and a photo op, you'll find the wider Culloden Battlefield site more engaging with its visitor centre and marked trails. But if you want to stand where real people died for a cause they believed in, the Atholl Men memorial hits different.

Admission to the battlefield is free, though the centre charges entry if you want the full experience. Allow 20 minutes just for the memorial itself, longer if you walk the battlefield paths. Spring and early autumn are best - midges can be brutal in summer.

Stay at Ardtower Caravan Park, just 1.8 miles away, or push out to Go Glamping at Loch Ness for something with more atmosphere. Either base works well for exploring Culloden and the wider Highlands around Inverness. Worth combining with the main visitor centre to understand what happened here.
