The visitor centre does the heavy lifting on context, but it's the memorials themselves that stay with you. Clan gravestones, the mass burial cairn, the Well of the Dead - they're spread across the moor rather than clustered together, which actually works. Forces you to move through the landscape and understand the geography of what happened here. There's no faffing about with interactive screens that try too hard; it's straightforward and respectful.

This is essential for anyone interested in Scottish history, but not a quick thirty-minute job. Allow at least two hours to do it properly - more if you're going to read the stones and really take it in. The moorland walking is gentle, though it gets windier than you'd expect even on decent days. Families find it meaningful rather than thrilling, which is fine; kids old enough to understand history will get it.

Stay at Ardtower Caravan Park nearby and you're well placed for a Highland holiday. Culloden makes sense as part of a bigger trip taking in Inverness and the surrounding castles, rather than a solo detour. Free admission, which is proper.
