Athelney Hill

A low rise in the middle of the Somerset Levels that looks rather unassuming until you realise what happened here. Athelney Hill is where Alfred the Great made his last stand against the Vikings in 878, hiding out in the marshes before launching his counterattack. The site itself is modest - there's a monument and views across the flat wetlands that stretch for miles. It's the kind of place where history feels real rather than packaged.

Walkers will get more from it than casual visitors. The surrounding landscape is what makes it worth the trip - the Levels are genuinely evocative, especially in winter when mist sits low and the whole area feels appropriately bleak and isolated. You can see why Alfred chose this spot. Allow an hour to have a proper look around and take in the wider terrain. There's a small car park and the walk to the monument is straightforward, though it can get muddy after rain.

Geographically it sits between Taunton and Bridgwater, making it a reasonable detour if you're staying at Thornhills Holiday Park or one of the other caravan sites nearby. It works best paired with a broader Somerset Levels walk rather than as a standalone stop. History enthusiasts will find it genuinely rewarding, though families with young children might feel it's a bit thin on the ground for keeping them engaged. The real draw is the landscape and the sense of place - not facilities or interpretation.
