Askern, St Peter

The church door creaks open to reveal an oddly satisfying blend of medieval stone and Victorian fussiness. St Peter in Askern is the sort of place that doesn't scream for attention but rewards a proper look - a solid parish church with 12th-century roots, standing quietly on the edge of this small South Yorkshire settlement near Goole.

Inside, you'll find the usual Victorian renovations working alongside genuine medieval bones. The chancel arch is the real keeper here - proper craftsmanship from centuries back. Nothing here will make your jaw drop, but there's something rather comforting about walking through a space where locals have gathered for eight hundred years.
