Ashurst's Beacon

The climb up Ashurst's Beacon isn't what you'd call forgiving, but the view across Lancashire makes those burning legs almost worth it. This stone tower sits at 430 metres, and on a clear day you can see the Pennines sprawled out to the east while the industrial sprawl of Skelmersdale fades into proper countryside behind you.

The tower itself isn't ancient - it was built in the 1970s to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee - so don't expect ruined medieval drama. What you get instead is a proper fell-walking experience without needing to trek all the way to the Lake District. The path is well-trodden, steep in places, and the moorland around it feels wilder than you'd expect so close to town.

Walkers get the most out of this. Families with young legs can manage it, though toddlers will struggle with the gradient. History buffs might be disappointed by the beacon itself, but the landscape tells its own story if you're bothered to look.

Allow an hour to reach the summit from the bottom, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos and catching your breath. It's free to visit, naturally. The best time is late afternoon when the light's softer and the crowds have thinned. Winter can be boggy underfoot, so come prepared.
