Ashpits Pond

A small freshwater lake just inland from Burry Port, Ashpits Pond is the sort of place that rewards a quiet morning walk rather than a destination in itself. The water sits surrounded by scrubby woodland and rough grassland - nothing manicured, but that's rather the point. You'll find the odd fisherman here, and birdwatchers do stop by, especially in winter when migratory species pass through. It's free to access and takes maybe 20 minutes to walk the perimeter, longer if you sit on the bank with a coffee and actually notice things.

The appeal is modest and specific. This isn't a beauty spot for the postcards. What it is, though, is a proper local spot that gets proper local use - you might spot herons, you'll definitely hear more birdsong than traffic, and there's something honest about a pond that's just a pond. Families with young kids will find it a bit underwhelming on its own - it's not a destination attraction - but as part of a broader walk or a break from the caravan parks nearby, it slots in nicely.

If you're based at Pembrey Country Park Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite just 3.2 miles away, or at Gwlad Glamping slightly further out, Ashpits Pond makes a decent leg-stretcher. You won't need more than half an hour here, and the walk itself is the thing rather than any facilities or attractions at the water's edge. Go when you feel like a bit of peace and quiet, not when you want entertainment.
