About Ash Wood
Kids will love scrambling over the mossy boulders and hunting for wildlife. We spotted several red squirrels during our visit, plus the usual woodland birds. Dog walkers seem to favour this place too, though you'll want to keep smaller children close as some paths drop away quite suddenly.
Allow a good hour for a proper explore, though you could easily spend a morning here if the weather's decent. The woodland floor gets pretty muddy after rain, so proper walking boots are essential. Free access as far as we could tell, with informal parking along the nearby lanes.
For families staying at places like Stowford Farm Meadows Holiday Park or Golden Coast Holiday Park, it's a cracking alternative to another beach day. The peace and quiet makes a nice contrast to the livelier coastal attractions around Ilfracombe. Worth combining with a pub lunch in town afterwards.
