Ash Millennium Wood

A woodland walk that appeared on the landscape just after the year 2000, Ash Millennium Wood sits a few miles outside Langport and offers something genuinely different from the usual Somerset park experience. It's a working piece of conservation rather than a manicured visitor attraction - planted specifically as a millennium project, the wood has matured into proper habitat with decent footpaths threading through.

What you'll find here is a chance to actually walk without the background hum of somewhere too polished. The ash trees dominate, naturally, mixed with other native species. Spring brings bluebells if you time it right, and there's a genuine sense of watching a young woodland do its thing. It's the kind of place where you notice small details - bird activity, the way light filters through - rather than gawping at a single viewpoint.

Walkers get the most from this. A solid hour's ramble covers it without rushing, and it works brilliantly as a leg-stretcher if you're based at Thorney Lakes or Esme's Escape nearby. Families with younger kids might find it a touch dull unless they're keen on spotting wildlife. There's no café or facilities, so come prepared.
