Round the back of the Key Theatre in Peterborough, someone's gone to the effort of creating actual art on the walls. It's the sort of thing you might stumble upon while hunting for the car park, and frankly, that's half the charm. The murals and installations shift depending on what's on show, so there's no guarantee what you'll find when you visit - which keeps locals coming back.

It's not a destination in itself, but if you're already in town catching a performance at the theatre, wandering round to see what's been put up takes five minutes and costs nothing. Kids might enjoy spotting the different pieces, and it beats standing about waiting for doors to open. History buffs and art types will appreciate that Peterborough's been pushing its creative credentials hard in recent years.

The real value here is bundling it with a proper caravan holiday at Ferry Meadows, just under three miles away - one of the better-rated sites in the area with decent facilities. You could base yourselves there, do a day trip into Peterborough for the theatre and a wander round the Cathedral, then come back to swap stories over a cup of tea. Nene Outdoors is another option if Ferry Meadows is full, though the reviews aren't quite as strong.

Don't expect to spend an afternoon here. But if you're in Peterborough anyway, it's worth a look. Free, easy, and sometimes genuinely good.
