Arthington Viaduct

The viaduct itself is a proper Victorian engineering feat - all red brick arches and wrought iron, spanning the River Wharfe just outside Otley. You approach it from the riverside path, and suddenly there it is, towering above you with five broad arches that feel genuinely impressive when you're standing beneath them. Built in 1875 for the railway, it's the kind of structure that makes you stop and actually look up.

The viewpoint works best if you walk the riverside trail rather than just drive past. From below, the scale hits differently. The Wharfe flows underneath, and in summer the banks are green enough to make you forget you're looking at Victorian industrial design. Walkers get the most from this one - give yourself an hour to approach from Otley along the river path, take in the viaduct from a few angles, and maybe sit on the bank for a bit.

It's free, obviously, and there's no admission to pay. The light's best in late afternoon when the brick glows warm. Winter visits work too, though the path can get muddy. If you're staying at Fairmead Farm Glamping just down the road, this is an easy leg-stretch that actually justifies the effort. Maustin Park and Haighfield are both within reach for a morning walk.

Honestly? It's worth the detour if you're already exploring the Wharfe valley. Don't expect a massive visitor facility or crowds - that's rather the point. It's a genuine working railway bridge that happens to photograph well and sit on a lovely walk.
