Arpinge Range

The Arpinge Range is a sprawling stretch of woodland just outside Canterbury that most visitors miss entirely. It's not dramatic or famous - no waterfalls, no Instagram moments - just proper forest doing what forests do: offering quiet, space, and decent walking routes through a mix of conifers and broadleaf trees.

You'll find well-marked paths threading through here, some easy loops lasting 30-45 minutes, others stretching longer if you're keen. The ground underfoot varies from gravelly to muddy depending on the season, so waterproofs are wise. It's the sort of place where you actually hear birds rather than screaming tourists. Families with kids do well here - younger ones enjoy the relative openness between the trees, and there's genuine shade on hot days. If you're more into serious hiking, the Kent Weald routes nearby offer harder going, but Arpinge Range itself is restorative rather than challenging.

There's no admission charge and no visitor centre, which keeps it refreshingly low-key. Go early if you can, particularly on weekends. The light filtering through the canopy is nicest in late spring and autumn, though it's honestly fine any time that isn't mid-freeze.

It's within striking distance of both New Beach Holiday Park and Fallow Fields Camping at Lathe Barn if you're basing yourself in the area. After an hour here, you'll have stretched your legs without needing the five-star experience. Close enough to Canterbury for lunch, far enough away to feel properly detached.
