Arley Bridge, River Severn

The River Severn curves prettily at Arley, and the bridge crossing it is one of those solid Victorian structures that makes you stop and actually look at it rather than just walk over. Built in 1896, it's cast iron with a single graceful arch, and from the riverbank below you get a proper sense of its engineering - the sort of thing the Victorians did without fuss or excessive decoration.

It's not a destination in itself. You don't drive to Arley Bridge and spend an afternoon there. But if you're walking along the Severn Valley Way or exploring the stretch between Bewdley and Kidderminster, it rewards a detour. The views upriver and down are gentle rather than dramatic - pastoral Shropshire countryside with the water doing its slow work through fields and woodland. Early morning or late light makes it worth a camera.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the industrial heritage context - Bewdley's just down the road and was serious river commerce territory - but family groups with small kids might find it less gripping unless you're already on a longer riverside walk. Allow ten minutes to cross it and enjoy the banks, longer if you're the kind of person who sits and watches water move.

Best visited as part of a walking loop in the valley rather than a standalone trip. Lodge Coppice Holiday Park sits five miles away and makes a sensible base for exploring this stretch of the Severn on foot. Parking at Arley itself is limited; the riverside verges are your best bet.
