The reservoir itself sits quiet and unshowy, the kind of place where you'll see anglers along the banks and the occasional heron picking through the shallows.

It's not a destination you'll spend hours at, but it works well as part of a morning ramble if you're based at The Huts at Woodthorpes or Rushbanks Farm, both within walking distance. The paths around the water are flat and easy - good for families with younger kids or anyone who wants to stretch their legs without needing proper hiking boots. The birdwatching can be excellent depending on the season, so if you've got binoculars, bring them.

The real value here is the walk itself rather than dramatic views or facilities. There's no visitor centre or café, so come prepared. Allow 45 minutes to an hour for a gentle circuit. If you're after something with more going on, Polstead Country Park four miles away offers playgrounds and woodland trails in one go.

The reservoir feels genuinely local - not polished up for tourists, which is either refreshing or underwhelming depending on what you're after. For a quiet morning out with the dog or a chance to spot kingfishers, it's worth the detour. As a main event, it's bit thin.
