Ardentinny Forest

The forest rises steeply from the shore of Loch Eck, all dense conifers and serious gradient - not what you'd call gentle woodland strolling. Ardentinny's the real deal if you want a proper walk with actual elevation gain, the kind where you feel like you've actually done something by lunchtime.

It's woodland trails mostly, and they're well-trodden enough that you won't get lost, but steep enough that you'll notice your legs. The loch views on a clear day are worth the huff and puff, and there's something satisfying about being under proper trees rather than ambling round a manicured park. Access appears to be free, which is refreshing - you just park up and go. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you're not racing.

Families with older kids (say, eight and up) who don't mind a climb will find it rewarding. Younger ones might lose patience on the steeper bits. Serious walkers will find it a useful hour or so when the weather's on side, though it's not a destination hike in itself - more a solid warm-up.

Stay at Loch Eck Caravan Park, just 3 miles down, or The Secret Glen Campsite if you fancy something smaller, and you're perfectly placed for this and other forest walks in the area. Dunoon's nearby for supplies and a decent cafe. The weather here turns on a sixpence - morning mist can burn off or stick around all day - so check conditions before committing to the steep bits.
