Ard Hill

Ard Hill rises up behind Kyle of Lochalsh with the kind of dramatic suddenness that makes you wonder why more people aren't queuing to climb it. The peak itself sits at around 300 metres - not exactly Alpine, but high enough that the effort pays dividends. What you get from the top is a proper panoramic view across Loch Alsh towards the Isle of Skye, with the Cuillins forming a jagged dark line on the horizon. On a clear day it's genuinely special; on a misty one, you're basically paying for atmosphere and a decent leg workout.

The walk takes roughly 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. It's steep in places, boggy in others, and the path isn't always obvious - take a map or download offline maps if you're relying on your phone. Most people can do it, though it's not ideal for very young children or anyone with dodgy knees.

What makes Ard Hill worth the detour is its position in the wider Skye landscape. It's the kind of walk that feels like a proper achievement without eating your whole day. Free, naturally. Early morning gives you the best light and fewer midges. Go when the weather window opens - don't wait for perfect conditions or you'll still be waiting in October.
