Appleby

The church sits at the heart of Appleby-in-Westmorland, a proper Georgian market town that feels frozen somewhere between the 18th century and now. St Michael the Archangel's Church dominates the High Street with its sturdy sandstone presence - you can't miss it, and frankly, you shouldn't.

Inside, the light comes through in long dusty beams. There's a real sense of centuries of worship layered on top of each other - medieval stonework sits alongside Victorian restoration work, and the whole thing somehow feels lived-in rather than museum-like. The chancel's got some decent medieval carved stonework if you squint, and the windows are worth a proper look.

It's a working church rather than a tourist attraction, which means you're stepping into something genuinely functional. That gives it a completely different feel from the grand cathedral tours you might be doing elsewhere in Cumbria.

Historically minded visitors will get the most from wandering the churchyard afterwards - there's real depth to Appleby's past, and the graves tell their own stories. Plan on 30-45 minutes if you're thorough. Come on a weekday morning when there's actual light and fewer people fussing about.

If you're based at Wild Rose Holiday Park nearby, it's absolutely worth the short drive into town. Appleby itself is lovely for a proper wander - the castle ruins are across the road, and the River Eden runs through everything. One visit feels like three.
