Appin Regiments

The Appin Regiment memorial stands as a sobering reminder of the Jacobite cause and the clans who fought at Culloden. Located just outside Inverness, this Highland site honours the men from Appin who marched into battle in 1746 - many never walked home again.

It's a fairly intimate memorial rather than a sprawling visitor attraction. You'll find yourself standing in front of stone cairns and plaques that list names of the fallen. There's something genuinely moving about reading the actual roll call of the dead, men from a single small region, all lost in one afternoon. The setting itself is windswept and austere, which feels fitting.

Histor buffs and anyone with Highland ancestry will get real value here. Families visiting Culloden battlefield - which is the main draw for most tourists - should absolutely make the short trip to see this too. It personalises the conflict in a way the larger visitor centre can't quite manage. Allow thirty minutes, maybe longer if you're doing the rubbing or taking photographs.

Admission details aren't confirmed, but it's managed by the National Trust for Scotland so expect either free access or a small fee. If you're camping at Ardtower Caravan Park nearby, it's genuinely convenient - under two miles away. Go Glamping at Loch Ness is a bit further out but still manageable as a morning visit before heading to the main attractions. Winter weather can be properly grim up here, so visit in spring or autumn if you can.
