Aonach Mòr

The cable car whisks you up 2,100 feet in about eight minutes - no mucking about. Aonach Mòr rises above Kinlochleven in the shadow of Ben Nevis, and while it doesn't quite match its famous neighbour for drama, it's got something Ben lacks: proper accessibility without the slog. The summit plateau spreads out like a landing pad, with 360-degree views that stretch across the Highlands when the weather cooperates. You're looking at Nevis itself, the Grey Corries, and if you're lucky, right down to Loch Leven.

This is brilliant for people who want alpine views without a five-hour walk. Kids can manage it easily, older visitors appreciate not having their knees destroyed, and photographers get genuine mountain light without the crowds you'd find on Nevis. The walk from the top station takes 15 minutes or so if you fancy a proper summit visit - worth doing even on iffy days because the views often clear higher up.

The whole affair takes 90 minutes maximum if you're leisurely about it. On bad-weather days, the cafe becomes the main event - acceptable coffee, decent views through the windows.

Stay at Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park or Ben Nevis Holiday Park, both within striking distance. This works perfectly as a rest day between harder Highlands walks, or a standalone half-day during a broader exploring trip. Check conditions before heading up - winter transforms it entirely.
